Introducing The Legal Design Pathway - 5 Steps to the Fellowship!

education & training Jan 26, 2023

The ultimate recognition and reward for completing the Legal Design Pathway is the Fellowship status. Being a Legal Creatives Fellow is not a given. It is a great recognition. The Fellowship status grants a lifetime membership to professionals who earned the status, but it also helps them put their Legal Design knowledge into practice and share their unique ideas and perspectives.

To obtain the Fellowship status, professionals need to go through the 5 levels which are as follows:

Level 1: Theory - Acquire the theoretical foundational knowledge in Legal Design at our Legal Design Pro Immersion  - our signature program. This program serves as an invaluable platform for those looking to gain insight into this rapidly evolving field by providing a comprehensive overview of the fundamental concepts and principles underpinning legal design techniques and tools.

The importance of acquiring theoretical foundational knowledge cannot be underestimated. Through this program, participants gain access to world-class expertise, supporting materials, and a real walk through the entire methodology with guidance on the current trends and best practices in legal design. This in turn helps participants stay abreast of all the developments in the field, latest trends and opportunities in the field.

In addition to giving these theoretical learnings, our Pro Immersion also offers an opportunity for personal growth and development through the role plays, simulations and other interactive activities organized throughout the program. Doing so, participants get a chance to role plays with each other and build an incredibly solid and supportive network that will stick way beyond the Immersion experience.

By attending this program, participants can rest assured that they will acquire a comprehensive view of the legal design landscape and opportunities to seize, as well as a thorough understanding of technical aspects through the elective classes in contract and legal information design as well as legal service design. This program enables participants to go as deep and as wide as they want, depending on their goals and objectives and serves as a great resource for those wanting to future-proof their legal career with Legal Design.

Level 2: Practice - Attending the supervised Practice Rounds organized within our  Pro Immersion is an extremely beneficial experience. It gives participants the opportunity to get a real-world feel for how a legal design project would operationalize and help equip them with critical problem-solving skills needed in today's legal landscape.

During these practice rounds, participants will be guided through various exercises and activities that are designed to help familiarize themselves with the concepts of legal design, including how to identify and solve pain points, run the usability tests and measure the impact of solutions obtained. Participants will also gain an understanding of how different types of design techniques and tools can be used to develop effective legal solutions. Additionally, they'll have the chance to work together in teams to create innovative solutions for specific cases.

By attending the supervised Practice Rounds organized in the Pro Immersion Exprience, participants will gain invaluable knowledge and skills that are essential for anyone looking to use Legal Design strategies and tactics in their day-to-day lawyering. Not only will it help them enhance their customer-centricity and hence their customer satisfaction but it also gives them a better understanding of how to use the Legal Design methodology to support the adoption of new technologies and assist in the digital transformation —all important components for the modernization of the legal practice.

Level 3: Production - The production of a contract design and a service blueprint are both essential steps in developing Legal Design expertise and practice, as these skills are actively sought by customers and organizations today.

A contract design is an essential production and it typically includes doing through all the steps of the Legal Design methodology, from understanding the pain points to prototyping a new design that would improve the effectiveness of the information delivered in the contract in terms of understandability and comprehensibility, amongst other metrics.

A legal service blueprint is an operational document that outlines how a legal department or law firm operationalizes the delivery of the legal service at each touchpoint – from the customer's perspective. Legal Service Blueprints help identify any gaps between desired outcomes and actual results; they can also help pinpoint where improvements can be made in order to enhance customer satisfaction and also reduce inefficiencies and optimize legal operations.

The importance of producing a contract design + a service blueprint to be peer-reviewed according to pre-determined criteria cannot be underestimated. By adhering to these standards, professionals can ensure that their projects meet the highest levels of quality control in order to achieve success. This is why professionals who successfully complete this level are granted the status of Legal Design Practitioner. This level attests as per the Pathway that professionals have been able to successfully use Legal Design theoretical know-how in practice, on their own and within a team.

Level 4: Publishing Legal design is an ever-evolving field that can only grow through the act of publishing and sharing legal design outcomes and metrics. By disseminating ideas and unique viewpoints, we can build on the existing knowledge to enrich the existing academic panorama and take these concepts further.

Publishing legal design work helps to spread knowledge about how the methodology works, which can not only increase public awareness but also lead to the better application of Legal Design and increased adoption by stakeholders. By making legal design concepts easier to understand, it can also reduce costly missteps that occur when legal design is misunderstood or misapplied. Furthermore, sharing ideas through publication encourages others in the field to think creatively about solutions and spark new conversations around legal design that could potentially improve overall outcomes for the legal system and legal professionals and end-users.

Ultimately, publishing and sharing ideas related to legal design is essential for the advancement of the practice and theory in the field. By increasing visibility into the world of legal design outcomes and results through publication we can ensure that everyone understands how they can benefit from this proven and repeatable process for greater clarity and effectiveness in legal information, legal services, organizations, and systems.

Level 5: Fellowship Once all the previous levels have been completed, memebrs become eligible for the Fellowship. The Legal Creatives Fellowship is an exciting opportunity for accomplished professionals who have given back to the Legal Creatives community. Giving back can take many forms, such as mentoring a new learner or a less experienced practitioner, giving feedback, doing a peer-review, writing a white paper, or even hosting a co-working session for the community!

Being a Legal Creatives Fellow is a great recognition, as not only does this status grant a lifetime membership, but it also helps professionals put their Legal Design knowledge into practice and share their unique work ideas, research, and perspectives to stand out and strategically position themselves as a professional of authority in their niche.

All they will need to do is submit their Fellowship application online, and then their peers at the Legal Creatives community will look at their application and proceed to the votes.
