The Test Cases: Applying layering to Instructor Agreements and Privacy Policies
Our field research into ISO structural layering began in 2024 with the Contract Nerds Terms of Use redesign and expanded across our own digital suite—including our website terms, privacy policy, and ABA Book platform. To test universal scalability, we applied our framework to third-party agreements across different document types.
While onboarding on Maven (a leading cohort-based platform), their Instructor Agreement presented a classic hurdle: a daunting wall of text. While dense legal blocks usually trigger assumptions that terms are restrictive or unfair, reading closely revealed the exact opposite—the substantive terms were exceptionally fair, balanced, and creator-friendly. The visual presentation simply wasn't doing justice to how good the agreement actually was.
To test cross-format applicability, we also applied our ISO layering framework to a third-party privacy policy for an AI governance book from our network. Even though the author had already invested significant effort into a clear, exhaustive structure, layering proved how effortlessly visual hierarchy elevates readability—without altering a single word of legal text.
