Lawyers dedicate endless time and care to drafting bulletproof contracts. Because every word is carefully weighed for risk and compliance, attempting a plain language rewrite is often a slow, delicate, and expensive process. Redrafting clauses requires extensive internal alignment, regulatory review, and executive sign-off; making full rewrites rare in practice.
This raises a fundamental research question: Can we drastically increase contract comprehension and user trust without modifying a single word of the legal text?
Plain legal language is not just about words—it is about structure, presentation, and navigation.
Under ISO 24495-1 standards, structural layering allows legal teams to make information findable, usable, and understandable while keeping their core legal text completely intact.
Traditional vs. Layered Architecture
Shifting from a monolithic block of text to an ISO-compliant layered architecture fundamentally changes how readers interact with a contract. By decoupling visual navigation from the binding text, organizations unlock immediate clarity without introducing new legal risks.

The Test Case: Applying Layering to Maven’s Terms
At Legal Creatives, we have already implemented this layered architecture for our own terms of use and privacy policy. But now, we are on a mission to help other organizations transform their contracts into clear, transparent, and user-friendly assets.
Serendipity brought us a great opportunity, and we simply could not resist getting creative! Having run over 20 live cohorts in our Academy, we know how powerful cohort-based learning is. As we explored expanding our reach on Maven, we were prompted to review their Instructor Agreement during onboarding.
Visually, the contract presented itself as a traditional wall of text. But as we read through it line by line, we realized something remarkable: the underlying terms were exceptionally fair, balanced, transparent, and creator-friendly.
There is a running joke in our community that legal designers want to redesign every contract they accept. But this time, the presentation simply wasn't doing justice to how good the agreement actually was.
We decided to use Maven's terms as an independent educational showcase to test once again the impact of the ISO layering methodology.
